PURPOSE:To improve the reliability by using a pressure sensitive conductive rubber for a limiter and regulating the unidirectional maximum moving position of a head so as to detect the moving position thereby reducing the adjustment process. CONSTITUTION:The track number counter of a track position of heads 5a, 5b and a detector detecting the maximum shift position of a head by the contact of a head carriage 7 onto a limiter 8 made of a pressure sensitive conductive rubber are provided. The carriage 7 is moved to be sensed by driving a step motor 6 at application of power to restore the head to an original position track position and after the counter is reset, the information representing the head at the original position track position is sent to the host and set initially. When the result of discrimination by the counter is in restorage operation, the head is moved up to the detection. After the counter is reset, the information representing the head at the original position is sent to the host side.
