PURPOSE:To produce high-performance carbon fibers having improved spinning property without causing melt sticking, fiber breakage, etc., by evaluating carbonaceous pitch on the basis of NMR analysis and selecting or blending and adjusting the pitch as an optimum material. CONSTITUTION:Carbonaceous pitch is subjected to NMR analysis and selected or blended and adjusted to give 80-96% pitch having 100-170ppm constituent ratio of signal intensity of the resultant spectrum and <=10% pitch having 6-25ppm constituent ratio of the signal intensity. The obtained pitch is then spun as a raw material pitch, infusibilized, carbonized and, as necessary, graphitized to afford the aimed carbon fibers.
