PURPOSE:To prevent mis-recording to a recorded track by retrieving the presence of recording at each recording position of a loaded recording medium, storing a check code together with the result of retrieval and discriminating a check code so as to control the operation of the retrieval means. CONSTITUTION:A recording presence detection circuit 85 detects the presence of a video signal at each recording location on a disk 2 through a head 5. The result of detection is latched by a latch 100 and a check sum is added to a track number of the latch 100 and stored in a memory backed up by a backup power supply circuit 93. A system controller 91 discriminates the check sum to control the retrieval. If a noise is invaded in an electric circuit and a track location signal has an error, another signal recording in error on a track having recording already is prevented.
