Process for preparing 1,4-dihydroxy-5,8-dihydronaphthalene and the related compounds. 1,4-Dihydroxy-5,8-dihydronaphthalene is obtained from benzoquinone and a 1,3-butadiene (which can be substituted by a halogen atom, or an acyl or alkyl group), in a single-stage reaction, in the presence of a ferric salt as catalyst. The products obtained can be used as anti-oxidising agents or as intermediates for preparing other anti-oxidising agents, for stabilising various organic materials.
