PURPOSE:To eliminate the feeling of disorder depending on the difference between the effective utilization of a display space and the display form by displaying information required for recording such as a track number or other operating state by one and same display device in a device replacing a recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A system controller 91 checks a power voltage of a power supply circuit 93 and if the power voltage does not reach a prescribed level, power indication is issued to a display device 92 to turn off the circuit 93. When the power voltage is at a prescribed level or over, a cassette presence detection switch 69 is checked and the presence of a cassette is displayed on the display device 92. When judged that the cassette is present, and a jacket for recording inhibition is used, the recording inhibition display is issued to the display device 92. In case of a jacket capable of recording exists, the record ing is prepared and after the recording is prepared, track information is con firmed as to a magnetic disk 2, and the confirmed information, e.g., a track number is displayed. Thus, the track number and other operation state are displayed in common by one and same display device.
