PURPOSE:To eliminate blooming and dark current irrespective of long-time exposure or short-time exposure by varying the operating frequency to recombine surface charges in responding to exposure-time. CONSTITUTION:An overflow drain OFD is provided opposite to the accumulation part 2 of a photodetecting part 1. A clock driver CKD functions as a control means to supply clock pulses phip1, phiAB, phips, and phis to the photodetecting part 1, the accumulation part 2, and a horizontal transfer register 3. A control circuit MS is a one to control the switching of the output state of said kinds of pulses, and able to switch the frequency of the recombination clock phiAB. The control circuit Ms controls the opening/closing of an analog gate AG in accordance with a release signal RS. If a suitable image pickup condition is set in the memory of the control circuit MS, the circuit MS sets the operating frequency F(T) of the pulse phiAB in responding to the exposure-time represented by an exposure-time signal T.
