PURPOSE:To miniaturize the title unit by shortening the height of a reading unit as much as possible by making the reading optical path of a carrier on which a sensor and an array are mounted a traverse Z-shape or a traverse U-shape. CONSTITUTION:The reading optical path is formed to the substantially traverse Z-shape or the traverse U-shape by providing reflecting surface forming members such as mirrors 24, 25 at both sides of a rod array lens 22. The rod array lens 22 is mounted on the frame 11 of the carrier at an inclining angle parallel to or substantially parallel to the surface of an original 6 and reading light is made incident on the image sensor at an angle right angled or substantially right angled to the surface of the original 6. Since the height of the image reading unit can be made very short, the casing of an image scanner of, for instance, a flat bed shape of a structure for running the image reading unit 3 can be made thin and the compact device is obtained.
