The proposed chain wrench has a transverse channel 36, through which the free end of the chain 35 can be drawn. The chain is locked in its position looped tightly around the workpiece by advancing the bar 4, the tongue 42 of which engages between the chain studs. A spring catch 5, releasably fastened to the free end of the chain, prevents the chain 35 from unintentionally slipping out of the channel 36. <IMAGE>
