A conventional ribbon saw (1) is assigned a forward-feed device which consists essentially of a guide channel (3). A length of material can be moved axially against a stop (5) via the guide channel (3) by means of a forward-feed plate (4) in such a way that one end of the length of material intersects the plane of an active side (7) of the ribbon saw (1). The guide channel (3) can be displaced perpendicularly to its longitudinal extent from its initial position into a limit position. In this process, a disc-shaped piece is cut off from the length of material by the side (7) of the ribbon saw (1). Before being guided back in the direction of the initial position, the guide channel (3) is moved away coaxially from the ribbon saw (1) and only subsequently pushed back perpendicularly to its longitudinal extent. The guide channal (3) finally reaches its initial position by means of renewed axial displacement in the direction of the plane of the side (7) of the ribbon saw (1). <IMAGE>
