PURPOSE:To measure the breadthwise thickness of a sheet type body at a high speed by composing a projecting means of a means which extends in the width direction of the sheet type body and a photodetecting means of plural optical fibers, and putting their one end opposite the projecting means. CONSTITUTION:A linear light source 11 which extends in the width direction X-X of the sheet type body 2 is fixed as the projecting means. The light source 11 uses an element light source including two wavelengths. Plural optical fibers 12 are fixed as the light receiving means across the sheet type body 2 and their one end 12a faces the light source 11. The other ends 12b of the fibers 12 are bundled arcuately and made coincident with the arrangement order of the end part 12a. Then, light signals from the fibers 12 are sampled by a rotary slit disk 13 and converged 14, and the light beams are split by a beam splitter 15 into light 16a with reference wavelength and light 16b with measurement wavelength, which are passed through filters 17a and 17b, converted 18a and 18b photoelectrically and sent to a computing element 19. The computing element 19 finds the ratio of the quantity of the light with measurement wavelength to the quantity of the light with reference wavelength and the thickness of the sheet type body 2 is computed based on the ratio and displayed.
