To obtain building materials of high conductivity and high mechanical, in particular thermal, and chemical resistance, it is proposed that a pulverulent calcined raw material be coated with a strongly adhering thin layer of metal carbides, nitrides or borides. This should preferably occur in a cloud of fine dust and/or a fluidised bed. The building materials can be used as floor electrodes in a DC furnace.
