PURPOSE:To prevent a printing position for a specified character from deviating, by a method wherein when printing a specified character requiring a high accuracy of printing position, as in printing a rule, a type for the specified character is once stopped at a position at a fixed distance from the printing position always after the selection of the type on a type wheel, is then moved by the fixed distance, and is stopped at the printing position. CONSTITUTION:When positioning a selected type 10a to a predetermined printing position (a) by rotating a type wheel 10, the positioning of the type 10a to the printing position (a) is always preceded by positioning the type 10a at a tentative stop position (b), and the distance l by which the type 10a is moved from the position (b) to the position (a) is constantly fixed. Accordingly, the final positioning of the type 10a to the printing position (a) can be replaced by the positioning after moving the type by the fixed distance l, irrespective of the current position (c) of the type 10a, and a constantly fixed type-selecting operation can be performed.
