PURPOSE:To suppress the consumption of power by displaying picture information read from a reading means or the picture information retrieved from a recording medium by a cathode ray tube having a laterally long tube surface and moving a scanning line consisting of scanning beam vertically to the tube surface. CONSTITUTION:The picture information read from the reading means 20 or the picture information retrieved from the information recording medium 19 is displayed by a display means 24 by using the cathode ray tube of the laterally long tube surface and moving the scanning line consisting of the scanning beam vertically to the tube surface. When the picture information is initially displayed, at the time of performing a display to a longitudinally long original, the direction of the picture information read by the reading means is changed and displayed by the display means and at the time of performing the display to a laterally long original, the picture information read by the reading means is directly displayed by the display means.
