In the multi-stage hydraulic piston/cylinder unit (16'), an enclosed chamber (38, 48) which is filled with hydraulic fluid and whose volume can be varied by displacing at least one wall but which is otherwise rigid is assigned to a telescopic element (30, 40). The telescopic element (30, 40) is connected in terms of movement to the displaceable wall of the associated chamber (38, 48) in such a way that when the telescopic element (30, 40) moves out the volume of the chamber (38, 48) is reduced. The expelled hydraulic fluid passes via a hydraulic fluid connection (60, 61) out of the chamber (38, 48) and into the cylinder space (39, 49) of the following piston/cylinder unit which is formed with the telescopic element (30, 40) and is thus also forcibly moved out. <IMAGE>
