PURPOSE:To shorten the time required for connection/separation of an optical fiber and an optical device, by interposing a connecting unit between the optical device and the optical fiber, and making the connecting unit which has connected the optical fiber adhere closely to the optical device. CONSTITUTION:When propagation constants of light beams of two pieces of single mode optical waveguides, for instance, an optical waveguide 12 and an optical waveguide 42 are equal or extremely similar, the light beam can be propagated from one optical waveguide to the other optical waveguide by making the side face adhere closely. That is, by interposing a connecting unit 4 between an optical device 1 and an optical fiber 2, and connecting the optical waveguide 12 and the optical fiber 2 through the optical waveguide 42, the optical fiber 2 can be connected without polishing an optical fiber joint surface of the optical device 1. Also, the optical waveguide 12 and the optical fiber 2 can be easily connected and separated and for instance, the time required for evaluating a characteristic of the optical device 1, etc. can be shortened.
