PURPOSE:To secure input of a retrieving subject while confirming it and to ensure a retrieving job of a high grade by inputting the control signals showing the start and end points of the retrieving subject and displaying this subject held between both control signals on a screen. CONSTITUTION:For control signals for retrieval, a symbol 21A showing a flag turned to the right is used for start of selection with a symbol 21B showing the flag turned to the left used for end of selection respectively. These control signals are not distributed on a keyboard 19 and therefore a virtual keyboard where keys are virtually corresponding to each other is set to select those control signals by means of a mouse 18 or a prescribed key. In a retrieval mode both symbols 21A and 21B are designated and the data on both symbols are stored in a RAM 13 respectively. A CPU 11 reads a document out of a sentence file 14 to store it in a retrieving job area of the RAM 13 and then reads out again the document. Then the character strings obtained for a period during which the symbol 21A and then the symbol 21B are detected are defined as the retrieved words and phrases. These words and phrases are displaced on a display 17. In this case, however, the CPU 11 functions to close the character display width by an amount equivalent to a prescribed number of picture elements so that the extension of the display area is avoided.
