PURPOSE:To produce a natural translated sentence in the 2nd language by deciding the order of words based on the meaning standard of the 2nd language and independently of the surface modifying order of the 1st language when plural modifiers related to the same noun are produced. CONSTITUTION:When an original sentence of the 1st language to be translated is inputted from an input part 1, the modifying element of a noun is analyzed under the control of an editing control part 4 and via a translation part 5 and various types of dictionaries. Then the meaning origin of each modifying element is read out. When the word order is decided by a generative grammar 6e, the surface word order of the 2nd language is decided with reference to each meaning origin as well as the surface structural information of the input sentence of each modifying element. In other words, when an English sentence is produced via an English generative grammar in a Japanese-English translation mode, the meaning origin of each word of the 2nd language is used to obtain a natural English sentence independently of the surface word order of input Japanese words. As a result, the post-editing job is omitted and the translation efficiency is improved.
