An endless elastomeric or rubber drive belt (24) includes a body (49) having a mid-circumferential plane (44) and first, second and third ply portions (72, 74, 76) of reinforcement therein. The first ply portion (72) has first cable means (80) oriented substantially parallel to the mid-circumferential plane (44) for carrying tensile loads and defining a second plane (87) contiguous therewith. The second ply portion (74) has second cable means (88) arranged on a positive bias angle and the third ply portion (76) has third cable means (6) arranged on a negative bias angle to the mid-cirumferential plane (44). The second and third ply portions (74, 76) are juxtaposed and constructed differently so as to substantially neutralize the shear stresses in each generated from tensile loading while bending by apportioning their strain levels in approximate proportion to their distances from the second plane (87). |
