In a cartoning machine, a carton sleeve holding mandrel 11 has an end pad 12 which is fixed and a slidable collar pad 14. The mandrel 11 is provided along its length with a series of recesses 16A, 16B, 16C, etc, located at predetermined distances from end pad 12, and the collar pad 14 carries detent means 15 in the form of a pair of blade members 18A, 18B adapted to fit a selected one of the recesses 16A, 16B, 16C in order to locate the collar pad 14 at a selected spacing from the end pad 12 appropriate to a known size of carton sleeve.
