NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I (R is 2-14C straight-chain alkyl; n is 1 or 0). EXAMPLE:A compound shown by formula II. USE:A liquid crystal compound which is useful as an electric display material, has a colorless liquid crystal phase in a wide temperature range, is stable and can be blended with existing liquid crystal compounds. PREPARATION:(i) A compound shown by formula II is reacted with a novel substance shown by formula III in the presence of a dehydrating agent such as especially N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide or (ii) the compound shown by formula II is reacted with a chlorinating agent, especially thionyl chloride, the prepared compound shown by formula IV is converted into an acid chloride and reacted with the novel substance shown by formula III to give a compound shown by formula I. The novel substance shown by formula III can be produced from 4-hydroxybenzoic acid through 4-acetoxybenzoic acid and 4-acetoxybenzoic acid 4'-propionylphenyl by three stages.
