A load carrier for a vehicle is provided with a strut (1) which extends transversely over the roof (6) of the vehicle, and, in each end, has a foot member (2) for fixed securement on edge portions (5, 6) of the roof (6). The foot member (2) has a support member (3) and a gripping member (4) urgable thereagainst by means of an operating device (21, 22), the gripping member having a gripping portion (19). The gripping member (4) is, with an upper portion, in sliding abutment against a fixed sliding surface (14) in the foot member (2). In one embodiment, there is provided, in the lower end of the foot member (2), a horizontal bottom portion (15) on which a cam portion (17) is slidable in towards the centre of the vehicle. The cam portion (17) has a cam surface (18) which inclines obliquely from the outside downwardly and inwardly, in engagement with a pin (20) on the gripping member (4). In a further embodiment, the pin (20) is longer and engages in obliquely directed grooves in the insides of the laterally defining portions (8, 9) of the foot member (2). |
