NEW MATERIAL:A 1-methyl-1-( 5-methyl-5-ethyltetrahydrofuran-2-yl ) ethanol shown by formula I (R is H or acyl) or an ester derivative thereof. USE:Perfume giving out floral, fruity or green aroma or fragrance having freshness and diffusibility. PREPARATION:Linalool oxide shown by formula II is catalytically reduced in the presence of Raney nickel catalyst, etc., to give 1-methyl-1-(5-methyl-5- ethyltetrahydrofuran-2-yl)ethanol shown by formula III, which is then catalytically treated with a corresponding carboxylic acid or a reactive derivative thereof to give a compound wherein R is R' (R' is acyl) in the formula I.
