<p>In the pyrometallurgical treatment of fine granular solids which, at the treatment temperatures, yield molten products, e.g. non-ferrous metal ore concentrates, with gases containing oxygen, the solids, mixed with the gases to form a suspension, are injected through a nozzle, as a particle jet, into a reaction chamber in which the solids are caused to react and are melted, it is disclosed, according to the invention, that the particle jet be sprayed through the reaction chamber as a concentrated free jet having a substance flow density in excess of 50 kg/m2 sec at a high speed, in excess of 35 m/sec., preventing flashback in the jet, the particle jet being ignited by its hot combustion gases or by an ignition flame. According to one embodiment of the invention, the particle jet is guided as an approximately horizontal secant within a vertical melting cyclone forming the reaction chamber.</p> |
