PURPOSE:To simplify the controlling system of a shaft-sealing apparatus, by discharging low-temperature water by operating a temperature-control trap attached to a condensation tank, thereby maintaining the temperature of a shaft-sealing chamber to a prescribed level. CONSTITUTION:High-temperature steam is introduced from a steam-supplying source 5 into a shaft-sealing chamber 3 and the steam released from the chamber is introduced through a pipe 12 into a condensation tank 13. Hot water condensed in the condensation tank 13 is returned through the pipe 12 to the shaft-sealing chamber 3 to effect the shaft-sealing of the chamber 3 with steam and hot water. A temperature-control trap 18 is attached to the condensation tank 13 via a pipe 17. When the fluid temperature in the condensation tank 13 is lowered below a prescribed level, the trap 18 is opened to discharge the liquid, upon which high-temperature steam is introduced from the steam- supplying source 5 to raise the temperature of the shaft-sealing chamber 3 and the condensation tank 13. The temperature of the shaft-sealing chamber 3 can be controlled to a prescribed level by this process.
