PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of slip page at the time of paper feed by reducing load at that time, by detecting the output pulse of the encoder provided to a roller following the movement of a sheet. CONSTITUTION:A second roller 10 is pressed to a first roller 9 and, when a sheet 11 is fed to the direction shown by an arrow S in a state held between the second roller 10 and a first roller 9, the second roller 10 is allowed to rotate so as to follow the running of the sheet 11. Because the second roller 10 rotates so as to follow the sheet 11, the rotational speed of the second roller 10 is proportional to the feed speed of the sheet 11. When slip is generated between the first roller 9 and the sheet 11 and the feed speed of the sheet 11 becomes slow, the rotational speed of the second roller 10 becomes slower than that when the sheet 11 is fed normally. Therefore, the signal from the encoder 12 provided in order to detect the rotation of the second roller 10 also becomes slow as compared with a normal case. Whereupon, a pulse monitor means detects that the frequency of the pulse of the output signal of the encoder 12 is lowered.
