PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines, e.g. cephem based antibiotic substances, etc., in high purity and yield under mild condition, by reacting malononitrile with carbon disulfide and alkali metal hydroxide in acetonitrile. CONSTITUTION:Malononitrile is reacted with carbon disulfide and an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium hydroxide, in acetonitrile optionally containing a lower alcohol at 0-30 deg.C for 0.5-5hr to afford the aimed substance. The reaction is carried out using the carbon disulfide in a molar amount of 0.8-1.0 based on the malononitrile and the alkali metal hydroxide in a molar amount of 1-3 times based on the malononitrile. The amount of the lower alcohol used is <=10wt% based on the acetonitrile.
