PURPOSE:To achieve the drying of a gel in a short time without causing cracking of the gel, by gelatinizing a raw material solution containing an alkoxyl- containing organometallic compound, substituting the alkoxyl group in the gel with hydroxyl group and drying and calcining the gel to produce a glass article. CONSTITUTION:A raw material solution containing an alkoxyl-containing organometallic compound (e.g. methyl orthosilicate) is gelatinized, dried and calcined to produce a glass article. Prior to the drying, the gelled solution is made to contact with a liquid or gas (e.g. hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, etc.) containing about >=40vol% water to convert the alkoxyl group remaining in the gel to hydroxyl group. The treated gel is dried and calcined. The gel solution can be dried with simple and effective means without causing cracking of the gel. |
