A process for the production of active aluminium oxide by the electrolytic dissolution of aluminium, characterised in that aluminium bodies which have first been depassivated by immersion in a solution containing mercury ions are placed as the anode in an electrolytic circuit with a graphite or steel cathode which does not form an amalgam, the voltaic cell thus formed is filled with a liquid electrolyte solution and, the aluminium hydrogel thus formed by the dissolved aluminium and the electrolyte in the absence of an electrical power source is removed from the cell, dried and thermally decomposed.
