PURPOSE:To rapidly decide the address of a DFCB (Data File Control Block) label corresponding to a desired file from the file name of the file by using a specific algorithm, by relating the file name, and the address of the DFCB label corresponding to the file, by the specific algorithm. CONSTITUTION:When a new file name is registered on a VTOC (volume Table Of Contents) 1, a code representing the file name is processed by a hash function routine 10. The output of the hash function routine 10 represents the address of the DFCB label in VTOC2, and VTOC12. When the bit of information of another file is written already, the output of the hash function routine 10 is set as a forefront address, and a DFCB0 label 8 found first after the forefront address, is set as a file 9, and it is registered at a DFCB1 label 6. When searching, it is performed by inputting the code representing the file name of a search targeted file, and setting the address of the output as the address to start search.
