PURPOSE:To obtain spinning pitch providing carbon yarn which has high strength, high modulus of elasticity, low variability of strength distribution, by passing a carbonaceous raw material through a specific sintered filter layer of laminated wire sheet and heat-treating the raw material. CONSTITUTION:A carbonaceous raw material (especially preferably one having 5-45wt% benzene-insoluble content and <=5wt% quinoline-insoluble content) is preferably preheated and passed through a sintered filter layer of laminated wire sheet having <=5mu meshes (preferably <=2mu meshes) to remove foreign matters in the raw material sufficiently. Then, the raw material is heat-treated at 300-500 deg.C (preferably 380-450 deg.C) under reduced pressure -10kg/cm<2>G (preferably 10mmHg- normal pressure) for 20min-10hr (preferably 1-6hr) to give spinning pitch having especially preferably 90-100% optically anisotropic phase and <=25wt% quinoline-insoluble content.
