PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal displaying body which is quick in responding speed and high in contrast, by setting the product of double refraction and liquid crystal thickness within a specific range and, at the same time, keeping the polarizing axis of a polarizing plate away from optical axes of liquid crystal molecules. CONSTITUTION:Rays of light from a light source 14 enter into a light receiving section 13 through a liquid crystal displaying body 14. The displaying body 14 is composed of a front base plate 2 which is provided with a beam-like ITO electrode 7 and polyimide orientation film 8 and subjected to a rubbing process, spacer 3, rear base plate 5 which is provided with an electrode 10 and orientation film 9 and subjected to a rubbing process, polarizer 1 and analyzer 6 which are respectively stuck to the base plates 2 and 5, and liquid crystal molecules 11 enclosed into the space surrounded by the base plates 2 and 5 and spacer 3. The thickness (d) of the liquid crystal is made thinner by making the thickness satisfy a relation DELTAn.d=0.66-0.85 (where DELTAn is double refraction) and the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules 11 is twisted by 170 deg.-190 deg. between the base plate 2 and 5. In addition, the polarizing axis of the polarizer 1 is kept away from the optical axes of the molecules 11. Therefore, this liquid crystal displaying body becomes effective to a computer terminal, liquid-crystal TV set, etc.
