The present invention relates to a method for monitoring the operation of an internal combustion engine in service, consisting of correlating, on a reference engine, the variation in pressure prevailing in the combustion chamber with the amplitude and frequency of the vibrations of various members, in calculating an equivalent level representing the stress level of the members, this equivalent level being used on engines of the same type in service in order to take immediate decisions for modifying the driving parameters or decisions for preventive or curative action. Particular application to high-power diesel engines.
