PURPOSE:To enable the digital recording of a sound signal or the recording of a video signal by one set by including a switching means which selects only two optional two heads among four heads for recording or reproducing the sound signal or the four heads for recording or reproducing the video signal. CONSTITUTION:When a servo changeover switch 27 and a recording system mode changeover switch 28 are connected to low sides, an sound mode is entered. A sound input 20 is processed digitally by a digital processing circuit 21 and recorded in time-base compression memories 22 and 23 alternately through a changeover switch 24, and a servo changeover switch 25 is connected to read out an input signal twice as fast as usual, so that the time base is compressed. A memory changeover switch 24 is turned on and off with the outputs of a reference oscillator and a control pulse generator 26 to control a drum motor through the servo changeover switch 27 and a servo circuit. The output of the switch 25 is passed through amplifiers 11 and 15 to drive heads 12 and 16. The switching between the sound and video signals by the recording mode changeover switch 28 is shown in the right lower part of a figure.
