PURPOSE:To execute a collating work with high reliability by providing a means for reading information on the external form of a fingertip which gives a reference for positional relation of a fingertip against a measuring surface of an optical means, so that an image of a fingerprint pattern to an outline of the fingertip becomes uniform. CONSTITUTION:When a fingertip F is made to about on the surface of measuring surface 6b, a collimator 11 is lighted, and light beams L3 are scattered and reflected in a fingertip background area. By this scatter reflection, a television camera 12 executes an image pickup of a fingertip shape image, and a fingertip shape image data is sent out to a processor 8. Subsequently, a collimator 1 is lighted, a raised line part and a ruled line part of a fingerprint P in a fingerprint measuring area corresponding to a mat member notch part 10 on the measuring surface 6b are obtained as a bright and dark pattern, and it is brought to an image pickup by a television camera 7 and sent out to the information processor 8. Accordingly, the processor 8 can position exactly a fingerprint pattern by fingertip external form information, and can execute exactly a comparison and a collation.
