In a process for reducing the carbon content of fly ash originating from a furnace, in particular dry furnace, by thermal treatment, wherein the fly ash is brought by means of an auxiliary fuel to a temperature suitable for ignition of the carbon content and at least a part of the carbon is burned, it is provided for a partial reduction of the carbon content of the fly ash without a substantial change in the grain size thereof that the fly ash is introduced with its grain size determined by the furnace into a vigorously mixing combustion chamber of a burner and that, at a temperature at least below the softening temperature, preferably below the sintering temperature, the carbon content is at least partially ignited and the fly ash is then burned out to the desired carbon content in pneumatic flow along a further reaction section. <IMAGE>
