The invention relates to a capacitive incremental length measuring system, in which a plate capacitor is used. Both at the stationary plate portion of the capacitor and at the plate portion of the capacitor which is displaced with respect to the stationary plate portion, the capacitive plate surfaces of said capacitor which are used for the purpose of length measurement exhibit surface elements which cause periodic variations in the capacitance in incremental scale units of the measurement path and which are connected together for each plate. This measure, which is to be regarded as the essential feature of the solution achieved by the invention, has the advantage, by contrast with designs of plate capacitors known from the prior art, that despite a short incremental point spacing the plate capacitor has available for evaluation a large variation capacity which can be effectively evaluated. The design of the plate capacitor as mutually displaceable threaded profiles is explained as a particularly preferred embodiment both for linear and for radial length measurement. Fig. 9 is proposed for the abstract for publication purposes. <IMAGE>
