A process for the preparation of olefins from a hydrocarbon feedstock stream boiling below 200 DEG C is described. In order to utilise the lower carbonisation tendency of gas cracking and the higher propylene content of the products, it is proposed that the feedstock stream is reacted catalytically to give liquid gas and the liquid gas is cracked to give olefins. The process can be used in particular for the production of propylene and ethylene from naphtha.
