A drinking valve for small animals has an axially displaceable valve pin with a sealing head, providing a seal from the outside when in the position of rest. An axially displaceable separate valve element, preferably in the form of a ball, is guided in the longitudinal direction in a valve housing with a snug fit and can move between two end stops, acting as valve sealing seats. The volume between the valve element and the sealing head can be emptied relatively quickly upon actuation of the valve pin, and the valve element is only lifted off from its valve sealing seat after adequate displacement of the valve pin. Thereafter, water can pass to a greatly reduced extent via the guide play to the valve outlet or refill the water supply. This valve avoids overwetting of the ground and ensures that a flow of water is always supplied appropriately for requirements.
