The invention relates to an electromagnetic switching apparatus having a DC magnet system. An evaluation circuit and a current detection device for the current in the coil are provided, said evaluation circuit determining a drop in the current when the switching apparatus is switched on. This drop in the current occurs at the instant when the magnet system is closed, so that a changeover device from attraction to latching excitation of the switching apparatus or a signal processing arrangement for monitoring and/or indicating the closed state of the DC magnet system can advantageously be connected downstream of the evaluation circuit.
