Gas water heater, having a burner (1) and a control valve (12/13), which controls the gas throughput to said burner (1) in proportional dependence on the respective water throughput to a heat exchanger (6), is actuated by means of the actuator of a water switch (10) and is arranged in a gas-supply pipe (5), and also having an arbitrarily adjustable throttling of said gas throughput to a selectable partial output of the burner (1), the gas throughput supplied to the burner (1) for start-up thereof being dimensioned, independently of this throttling, at least for a throughput sufficient for overignition of the burner. <IMAGE>
