For producing high-strength, low-alloyed steel materials, which are weldable without preheating and have low hydrogen contents, from multi-pass welding material, the chemical composition of the steel material is adjusted on the basis of its transformation behaviour during continuous cooling from a temperature above the AC3 point during cooling times of less than 10 seconds in such a way that, between the AC1 point and the martensite point (Ms) the martensite transformation (M) is always preceded by a grain-refining ferrite transformation (Z) and a material microstructure mixture is thus formed which has a hardness not exceeding 350 HV10.
