PURPOSE:To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium which has good corrosion resistance and excellent magneto-optical characteristics and is provided with an inexpensive protective film by incorporating a prescribed ratio of specific metallic elements into a magneto-optical recording layer consisting of a rare earth-transition metal alloy layer and providing a polymer layer as the protective layer. CONSTITUTION:A dielectric layer 2 to enhance a Kerr effect is provided on a substrate 1 consisting of glass or resin. An RE-Fe-Co-M alloy metal 3 is formed thereon. RE is a rare earth element, M is elements except the rare earth element and includes at least 1 or >=2 kinds of the elements selected from at least Ta, Hf, and Nb. The ratio of RE is specified to 18-35atom% of the entire amt. of the alloy, the ratio of Co to <=20atom%, and the ratio of M to 2-10atom% of Fe+Co+M. The polymer layer 4 is formed as the protective layer on the layer 3. An SiO2 film, etc., are used as the dielectric layer 2.
