In an automatic rifle with a breech block 1, Fig. 2 recoiling against the action of a return spring 2, a spring-guiding cylindical insert 3 is provided and is located in a bore 11 in the rear end of the breech block 1 so as to act as an additional inertia mass for the breech block when high charge cartridges are used, the insert 3 being reversed and located in the plug end 4 of the breech case 5 as shown in Fig. 3 so as not to modify the inertia of the breech block when normal charge cartridges are used. The breech block 1 is formed with a notch 12 Fig. 1 which is engaged by the sear 6 in the cocked position, the sear 6 being pivoted freely at 7 and being engaged at 61 with a nose 81 on the trigger 8.
