The apparatus, which is for inserting electrical spring sockets (12) into holes (H, Fig. 8) in a printed circuit board comprises a ram (86) which is driven in vertical reciprocating motion, to drive the sockets (12) carried by a plastics strip (11), each in turn from a workpiece insertion position down through a tubular guide (99) into a respective hole in the board. The tubular guide (99) comprises two parts (99a, 99b, Fig. 10) which cooperate to provide a head mounted, with clearance, in a bushing so that the two parts (99a and 99b) can pivot slightly transversely of the length of the tubular guide (99). Elastomeric rings (140, Fig. 8) surround the two parts of the guide (99) at its end remote from the head. The two parts (99a and 99b) are thereby capable of being splayed resiliently apart to allow the head of each socket (12) to pass out of the guide (99) and into the hole (H), and so that if the socket (12) is misaligned with the hole (H) so as to but against the printed circuit board, damage to the board is avoided. The strip (11) carrying the sockets is intermittently advanced by a sprocket wheel (52). The printed circuit board is movable in the X and Y directions. <IMAGE>
