In the case of a filling machine for filling vessels, especially bottles, with a liquid filling material (liquid) which is under ambient pressure, a plurality of filling elements are provided on a rotor which rotates about a vertical shaft and each have a filling pipe which projects over the underside of the filling element and extends into the vessel to be filled until it nearly reaches the floor of the said vessel during filling. The filling pipe of each filling element is connected to a liquid channel which is formed in the said filling element, is used to feed the liquid to be poured off and contains an electrically controlled liquid valve which is closed in response to an electrical switching signal and interrupts delivery of the liquid into the vessel to be filled when the level of the liquid has reached a predetermined level in the vessel. Furthermore, each filling element has an aeration channel which opens out into the liquid channel downstream of the liquid valve in the direction of flow and can be opened to the atmosphere by means of a controlled aeration valve when the liquid valve has been closed. The aeration valve is controlled by means of a control element in such a way that it only opens the aeration channel when, owing to the relative movement of the filling element with respect to a standing surface which supports the filled vessel, a predetermined volume of the filling pipe is removed from the liquid of the filled vessel and...
