A tensioning apparatus for the belt drive of an internal combustion engine comprises a tensioning roller (6), which acts on the belt (3) with a spring force determining the belt tension, and a deflecting roller (11), which is separate from the tensioning roller (6), determines the length of the path of movement of the belt (3) and acts substantially inflexibly on the belt (3). The path followed by the belt (3) is sensed in the region of the tensioning roller (6); if the path changes, the deflecting roller (11) is adjusted correspondingly until the tensioning roller (6) has resumed its original position, in which the spring (8) pretensioning it assumes its initial state and develops the specified force. In this way, the belt tension is kept constant. <IMAGE>
