Devices for storing and dispensing thin, sheet-like articles, such as bank notes or coins, are provided, which devices have a multiplicity of receiving compartments which, all connected to one another by means of a guided helicoidal part, form a unit, which extends over a number of windings corresponding to the multiplicity of receiving compartments. For temporary separation of some of the receiving compartments in each case, there is provided at least one fixedly arranged, rotatable cylindrical element with a helical groove in its outer or inner surface. On a level with the cylindrical element or elements there is provided at least one fixed opening for the feeding-in of individually separated articles and for the discharging of individually stored articles. In the case of these devices, a very great number of receiving and depositing compartments have to be accommodated in a very confined space, into which, depending on the embodiment, for example bank notes or coins are introduced, individually in each case, and are also individually deposited in each compartment. Furthermore, the feeding-in and inserting of the respective articles may be performed manually or else automatically, while the dispensing of the respectively individually deposited articles always takes place automatically, either at the same place as the insertion or at a place offset vertically, or possibly laterally, with respect to this insertion.
