Ceramic-forming elements are used to produce prepolymers in which the ceramic-forming elements are bound to one another and which have easily eliminated elements. The prepolymers are subjected to partial pyrolysis, during which easily eliminated elements are eliminated and free valences are formed on the ceramic-forming elements. During or after this step, the free valences are combined with the application of heat to give the ceramic polymeric material which has a predetermined degree of crosslinking. Part of the easily eliminated elements is, prior to the partial pyrolysis, replaced with the aid of a chemical reaction by difficult-to-eliminate elements which are not eliminated during partial pyrolysis and which do not crosslink with one another. The partial pyrolysis is then carried out and, before or during this, only the remaining free valences are combined to give a ceramic polymeric material which has a degree of crosslinking reduced in accordance with the difficult-to-eliminate elements incorporated.
