PURPOSE:To obtain indole from an indole-containing oil in high recovery, by contacting an indole-containing oil with an acid to form an oligomer salt of indole, separating and dissolving the salt in an alcohol, removing acid from the solution with a basic substance and thermally decomposing the deacidified oligomer. CONSTITUTION:An indole-containing oil having an indole content of as low as <=10% is made to contact with an acid (preferably hydrogen halide) at >=-10 deg.C to form an oligomer salt of indole, which is separated by filtration, etc. The separated oligomer is dissolved in an alcohol (e.g. methanol, ethylene glycol, etc.) and deacidified with a basic substance to obtain a mixture of the oligomer and alcohol. After removing the alcohol, the oligomer is thermally decomposed at 100-350 deg.C to recover indole. USE:Raw material for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals.
