PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having chelating action and useful as a raw material for agricultural chemicals, etc., at a low cost, by cooling and aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of iminodiacetic acid containing an alkali metal salt of nitrilotriacetic acid while keeping the pH at a definite level. CONSTITUTION:A saturated or nearly saturated aqueous solution of an alkali metal salt of iminodiacetic acid (abbreviated as IDA) containing an alkali metal salt of nitrilotriacetic acid (abbreviated as NTA) is cooled to 50-5 deg.C at >=10pH to obtain a crystal of hydrated alkali metal salt of IDA. The crystal is separated, dissolved in water and neutralized with sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid to 2.4pH to obtain IDA free from NTA in high yield.
